About the name Track Town Software

On a warm spring day in 2009 I was sitting in my back yard eating Track Town Pizza and wondering what to name my new software company. I wanted an available .com domain name. I also was thinking about acknowledging one of two strong Eugene, Oregon traditions.

Eugene's counter-culture tradition can still be experienced at events like Saturday Market, Oregon Country Fair, Eugene Celebration and the Slug Queen coronation. There might be more tie-dye shirts in Eugene than Berkeley. What about the name DeadHeadSoftware.com? After a little reflection I decided this may not be the best choice for a software developer.

Eugene's track and field tradition gives our city the nickname "Track Town USA". University of Oregon's Hayward Field has been the location for many U.S. Olympic Trials and national championships and the annual Prefontaine Classic. Legendary Duck coaches include Bill Bowerman and Bill Dellinger. Duck Olympians include Steve Prefontaine, Mac Wilkins, Kenny Moore, Alberto Salazar, Joachim Cruz and many others.

I considered my many pairs of Nikes and zero pairs of Birkenstocks. Currently I don't own a tie-dye shirt. All things considered, the name TrackTownSoftware.com became the clear choice.

Later that fall our Cross Country team finished 3rd at the NCAA championships behind UTEP and Wisconsin. We fared better the following spring when the Ducks won the 1984 NCAA Track and Field championships at Hayward Field.
